Does MagSafe charge through a tumbler lid?

Wireless charging wants the back of the phone against the charger's face. In the NMT lid mount the charging puck sits face-up in the lid and the phone rests directly on it — the same contact you get from a puck lying on a desk.

Nothing has to charge through the lid, because the puck's face is the top of the lid. Your phone lands on that face, not on the lid.

The lid holds the charger

The mount is a replacement lid. Take the original lid off a YETI or Stanley cup you already own, snap the mount on in its place, and the cup — now wearing the mount as its lid — is a phone dock wherever you set it: console, desk, counter. With the mount on, that cup is a phone stand, not for drinking.

Built into the top of that lid is a cradle for a 25W charging puck. Your puck seats in the cradle face-up, and that face is what your phone meets. The mount itself has no magnets and no electronics — it is the cradle and the cord path. The puck brings both the magnets and the charging, which is why your phone charges the whole time it is docked, and why a mount with no puck in it holds nothing at all. The puck is required, and it is not included.

Which charger goes in

The cradle is built for the 25W class: the Apple 25W MagSafe Charger or the Samsung Qi2 25W Magnet Wireless Charger (model EP-P2900). Those two pucks share the same outside size, so either one fits every mount we make.

The older Apple 15W MagSafe puck does not work in this mount. Both Apple pucks carry the MagSafe Charger name, so the wattage is the thing to check before you order. We do not sell pucks; the two links above go straight to the ones that fit.

One accessory note. The Charger Skin is charger-specific. Every mount fits either puck, but the circle inside each puck's face is not the same on the Apple and Samsung chargers, and the skin is cut to that circle — so pick the Apple version or the Samsung version to match the puck you own.

Where the cord goes

The cord runs through the mount rather than around it. It goes down through the lid, wraps around the cable management on the underside, and comes out the back. You feed through the length you want, and the excess coils underneath in the lid's own recess, so it never eats into the cup's room. From there it runs to a dash USB port, a wall adapter, or a portable power bank.

Which phones snap on

iPhone 12 and newer have MagSafe magnets built in and go straight onto the puck. Samsung and other Android phones need a magnetic Qi2 case — the magnets live in the case, not the phone. Either way the pairing is the same: puck below, phone or magnetic case above.

Your phone charges as fast as your charger and phone allow. To pull the full 25W from the Apple puck you need a 30W or larger USB-C power adapter behind it; on a smaller adapter it still charges, just slower.

Your cup picks the mount

Every mount is the same idea in a different lid, so the only question is which cup you already have.
